HOFBH Center of Excellence Spotlight: MARR Addiction Treatment Center
For over 45 years, MARR Addiction Treatment Centers has specialized in treating individuals whose lives have been shattered by addiction by offering effective programs that are built on the passion of their team by giving hope to individuals and their families. The center’s programs treat substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders through a mind, body, spirit approach that identifies the underlying issues and uses clinically proven techniques combined with wellness and experiential components. Even after treatment is completed, the team goes a step further to assist with long-term recovery support through its highly regarded alumni program.
The first step at MARR begins with a thorough assessment, during which the presence and/or severity of the disorder will be determined and may then become the basis for the individual’s treatment plan. Once admitted, at the core of MARR’s Treatment Model are four components that make up the mind, body, spirit approach:
Primary Treatment – MARR is focused on not just treating substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health issues, but also providing psychoeducation to help with long-term success. The clinical team identifies core issues, creates a treatment plan, and implements psychoeducation to help the client develop new skill sets like anger management and conflict resolution.
Community Living Model – At the same time, the residential managers focus on experiential treatment to help each client put their new skills into practice. The goal is not just to fill the mind and heal the body, but to help the individual experience being in recovery in different settings so they learn how to navigate potential challenges.
Family Program – In addition, the family counselors at MARR also focused on the individual’s family so that while the person is healing, their family is working on their own recovery as well. The robust family program includes access to webinars, a 3-day family workshop, family groups, and extensive education.
Alumni Support – Even before treatment is over, individuals are introduced to the alumni coordinator. The program celebrates a “MARR for Life” attitude that connects each client with ongoing support. The community brings together alumni who are new to recovery with those who have been in recovery for years or even decades to provide support, encouragement, and continued community.
“These four areas are constantly working together, which is something that we are really proud of. This method is something distinctive to our program because many times, there may be one or two elements present, but not all four at the same time,” says Bill Anderson, CEO of MARR Addiction Treatment Centers.
“Our individualized treatment plans are broken out into three phases. Phase one focuses on in-depth learning, doing significant work, getting adjusted, etc. The second phase is when we begin to apply skills in a setting that helps them to be successful. Finally, the third phase gives them more practice in real-life scenarios. We want them to string together more days in recovery and be more successful,” adds Kimberly Alexander, Chief Clinical Officer of MARR Addiction Treatment Centers.
Recovering Professionals Program
Unique to MARR is its Recovering Professionals Program, which offers confidential residential addiction treatment for high-level skilled and licensed professionals. The program is geared towards individuals in demanding professions who are subject to constant expectations and pressures. What makes this program special is that in addition to intensive addiction treatment, individuals also receive care specific to their lifestyle needs such as recovery support during stressful legal issues. There is also an alumni group in place with other professionals as well as long-term monitoring for up to five years.
“Once someone gets into recovery, there’s an opportunity for them to get their career back on track, but what’s really important to us is that connecting piece that gives the individual an opportunity to stay in recovery by learning skill sets to help them cope with pressure and stress so they don’t go back to the old ways of coping,” says Anderson. “Our alumni group is paramount in instilling hope that recovery is possible because peer support is an incredibly important key.”
Breaking the Stigma and Setting Up for Success
Based in Atlanta, Georgia, MARR joins the Hall of Fame Behavioral Health as a Center of Excellence in support of helping to break the stigma for athletes and their families in seeking help for addiction recovery.
“We strive to provide a nonjudgmental zone because there’s a lot of guilt and shame that often comes with the stigma of getting help, and it’s one of the hardest things to overcome. We want people to know that our door is open, and we can help,” adds Alexander. “Once someone is in our program, we continue the work to break through stigmas and barriers. We really go deep into the mind, body, and spirit wellness. Everything we do is evidence-based, which includes looking at the person’s life experience. We look at their family history and we also look to understand the environment they’re in. For athletes, for example, we will create a specific plan for coping skills for situations like championship celebrations where alcohol may be present.”
“MARR Addiction Treatment Centers is truly committed to the individual, before, during, and after treatment. It is an honor to welcome them as a Hall of Fame Behavioral Health Center of Excellence,” says Ryan Cain Executive Vice President of HOFBH.
