HOFH Elite Care Center Spotlight: Plymouth House

Since its inception 20 years ago, The Plymouth House has provided a unique process to help individuals and their families begin living a better life, free from addiction. The residential treatment center helps men and women heal from addiction with the 12-steps of Alcoholics Anonymous in a confidential environment that takes extra measures to go above and beyond HIPAA and health privacy standards. In 2021, The Plymouth House joined Guardian Recovery Network, a leader in substance use disorder treatment, and introduced medical and clinical care to its winning formula.

“For individuals that may have gone through treatment multiple times, especially those who have found themselves unsuccessful, what The Plymouth House offers is a unique experience that’s much different than a traditional 28-day stay,” says DJ Prince, Director of Marketing of Guardian Recovery Network. “The program has been incredibly successful for people who are struggling or who have failed with treatment in the past. We give them an opportunity to build long-term sobriety.”

Located in the foothills of the White Mountains in Plymouth, New Hampshire, the 7-acre campus sits on a 60-acre property surrounded by peaceful walking trails, a river, and abundant trees. The Plymouth House Process is a powerful combination of 12-Step work and intensive therapy. The phases are designed to follow a natural progression from one to the next. The Primary Care Program comprises the first two phases. The first phase, Residential Inpatient Treatment, focuses on the first three steps of recovery. In the second phase, the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), guests work on Steps Four through Seven. Upon graduation, guests can complete the 12 steps by enrolling in the optional Extended Care Program or Monitor Program.

Although the program at Plymouth House follows a unique phased process, every guest is provided with highly individualized care. The targeted combination of clinical, medical, emotional, and holistic therapies provides guests with a restorative program that is customized by their case manager during and after the Plymouth House Program. The  Case Manager is an advocate for each guest, ensuring that every individual is building a solid foundation for long-term sobriety. This includes checking in on the progress being made by each guest, serving as the main point of contact between clinicians and family members, and assisting with external issues such as paperwork for court cases, employee assistance programs, and probation officers.

As a part of the individualized care plan, guests are invited to participate in a wide range of other therapeutic activities. These include:

  • Recreational opportunities such as hikes along the river, group sports including basketball, horseshoes, volleyball, and softball, access to the fitness center, and creative arts activities.

  • Yoga classes that focus on the development of mind-body connection as well as meditation classes that teach guests how to quiet their minds as they bolster their spiritual connection and develop their own personal sense of a “higher power.”

  • Life skills workshops which teach guests a variety of imperative tools such as cooking, paying bills, applying for jobs, vocational training, communication skills, etc.

In joining the Hall of Fame Health as an Elite Care Center, Plymouth House seeks to help break the stigma of getting help by providing a unique and individualized program that can offer a solution to those who have tried different treatments in the past with little success.

“As a substance use disorder organization, we are uniquely attuned to the widespread need for quality and compassionate treatment for athletes and other professionals,” adds Prince. “These struggles can sometimes be overlooked and associated negatively with one’s performance but we truly believe that a mentally balanced and healthy professional in any capacity is going to be the strongest member on a team.”

“For athletes, extreme pressure to perform can be traumatic and a precipitant to addictions and other mental health issues like depression. This pressure can lead to unhealthy coping mechanisms. Treating trauma and the underlying mental health problems is important in treating athletes,” adds Russell Beebe, LCMHC, MLADC, Clinical Director of The Plymouth House. “Self-image and self-identity are tied closely to the need to be a high performer and the loss of this self-image can trigger a maladaptive grieving process which is important to look at in treatment. It's important for the athletes' recovery to find their identity in other things and to work through ambivalence in asking for help.”

“The team at Plymouth House has stayed true to its commitment to helping individuals transform their lives since it was founded,” says Ryan Cain, President of the behavioral health program for Hall of Fame Health. “This dedication is one that we align with at Hall of Fame Health. We look forward to working together to offer high-quality treatment to athletes, their families, and others who are seeking treatment.”
